A Note for Readers:
Dynathrive Q&A is going to be a series of articles that showcases aspiring and/or established entrepreneurs that are making big leaps in the way they contribute to society. These are all individuals that have a large appetite for performing at their peak potential in their health, wealth, business and relationships.
Khaled Attalaoui is the first guest on Dynathrive Q&A, and I am honored to have him on as he is one of my long time friends, as well as someone I look to for advice on life’s many trials and tribulations. Khaled is a true family man, health fanatic, career focused, financially adept, and avid traveler, with an obsession for self-development topics.
Enjoy the read, and I hope you will pick up on some enlightenment.
You recently ran the Vancouver BMO marathon, what was that like for you?
Khaled: It was absolutely amazing! Being my first full marathon I was able to identify many areas of my running game that will need attention before my next race. Having finished well under my original target time and persevering through my injuries during training, I consider it a great success.
What advice would you give to the thrill seekers that want to engage in challenging, physical tests?
Khaled: Be prepared to make large sacrifices during training such as an extremely strict nutrition plan, saying no to friends’ plan more often and waking up before sunrise. However, once you have completed your physical endeavor, there is an irreplaceable feeling of elation and accomplishment.
You run a blog site called Modern Masculinity, which I have had the pleasure of reading periodically. What was the reasoning behind the name?
Khaled: Feminism has come to fruition in the past century and a new perspective of the gender gap has accompanied it between men and women. My aim is to stay true to the essential components of a man’s life through the website; whether it be relationships, career, nutrition, health, or spirituality, I do my best to share knowledge and help enrich men’s lives.
If you only had ONE car to drive for the rest of your life, assuming it could run forever, which brand and model would it be?
Khaled: As a teenager I had a constant love affair with German luxury cars. Since I was seventeen I’ve owned four cars, all of them Volkswagens. Should I have to pick only one, I would go with a fully loaded, off-road capable V12 VW Touareg sports utility vehicle. It doesn’t take a Ferrari in a drag race, but it will get you out of a pinch with its practicality and packs a punch under the hood.
Do you have an ideal woman in mind for a relationship? What would she be like?
Khaled: Most men will have a “type” of woman, however I have never found myself sticking to one hair color, body type, ethnicity, etc. To put it concisely, the ideal woman for me would have a great complexion, is athletic, tall, and intellectual and has a strong, but nurturing maternal essence about her.
Give us a money management rule, or trick that you consistently abide by.
Khaled: A quick trick that has worked to boost my savings over the years is to set up an automatic transferal of a certain percentage from every paycheck, to a savings account; while it seems quite simple, many have not yet set this up. It ensures that you build savings before spending money on anything else; in essence you are paying yourself first.
When investing I constantly remind myself of the mantra from the famed entrepreneur Kevin O’Leary mentioned in his biography Cold Hard Truth; wherein he describes every dollar he invests as a soldier that he is sending to war, where he is the General making the decision only when he envisions victory.
Here is a scenario: you are on a desert island with no food, but plenty of water to last you a lifetime. What are THREE foods you would have in unlimited quantity?
I know that you are a fan of cold showers, what makes you do this regularly and is there any benefits to it?
Khaled: I find that it’s as a great way to gain adrenaline in the early morning; in fact it provided me with so much energy, that I substituted it for coffee during an entire month with little noticeable difference.
Stepping out of your comfort zone at least once a day is a great way to grow, and standing under the frigid water definitely is not comfortable in any way imaginable.
What is ONE thing other then food, water and oxygen, you could not go a day without?
Khaled: I will go ahead with exercise. Whether it is a quick run, lifting session, or a biking commute to work, humans are made to move. Oh, and of course I can’t forget dark chocolate, guilty as charged!
Name THREE books that have drastically changed your life:
- Sex at Dawn: How We Mate, Why We Stray, and What It Means for Modern Relationships by Christopher Ryan, PhD
- SEAL Team Six: Memoirs of an Elite Navy SEAL Sniper by Howard E. Wasdin (Mentioned in “4 Books That Will Add Steel to Your Spine”)
- Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry Into Values by Robert Pirsig
Is there a particular person that has passed on, or is still living that you were enlightened by? Who is this person, and how did they impact you?
Khaled: My paternal grandfather is someone who I only knew for a short time in person, yet I learned so much about his life from family and friends over the years. His story is one that is hard to believe at times, beginning as an orphan abandoned on the edge of the Sahara Desert, having fought overseas for over six years, then returning and taking on the back breaking task of building and maintaining railroads across France.
I admire and identify with him more than anyone else I have ever had the privilege of meeting. He has taught me the value of determination and hard work, along with the life lesson of never giving in.
What is your favorite quote?
“The important thing is this to be able at any moment to sacrifice what you are, for what you will become” – Eric Thomas
